Max Henry Barnhart

I am a freelance science and health reporter with over a year of experience as a professional reporter and seven years of experience as a biologist.

I earned my B.S. and M.S. in Biological Sciences from SUNY Buffalo, where I studied the evolution of ancient ebolaviruses. In 2018 I began my Ph.D. studies in Plant Biology at the University of Georgia where I study how sunflowers respond to heat and drought stress.

In 2020, I became the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Athens Science Observer, a graduate student-run science blog. During that time I was awarded a grant from the American Society of Plant Biologists to create and print a zine to freely distribute around Athens, Georgia.

Then in 2022 I was awarded the AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship and was placed at National Public Radio. That led to a part-time position as a global health and development reporter and ultimately a consistent freelancing gig I maintain today.

Now, I’m finishing up my Ph.D. and am looking for the next big opportunity! So if you’re on the market for a reporter, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

With love,
